Caring for Delicate Ceramics

Ceramic objects are generally creations of art that are extremely vulnerable and expensive. Proper care for your ceramics can bring out their original beauty and shine. Ceramics, particularly those poorly stored, can attract dirt, grime and stains that can damage them. However, improper cleaning can do more damage to your items.

When removing dirt and grime, try soaking the object in water and ammonia solution for 24 hours. It is advised to use one cup of ammonia for every two gallons of hot water.

To remove silver marks, use metal polish. Try as many brands of polish to see which one works best. Put a small amount of polish on a cloth or sponge and use it to rub off the marks. Use a clean cloth or sponge to buff excess polish off of the ceramic. To remove glue and paint, use acetone in a similar fashion.

To eliminate mineral deposits and rust stains, immerse the ceramic in full strength white vinegar over two days for light mineral build-up and over several weeks for extensive build-up. You can break the deposits by scratching it with a butter knife, but do so with great care. When deposits and stains are gone, clean the ceramic with soap and warm water.

To lighten darkened crazing, use 40 percent undiluted solution of hydrogen peroxide. Wear waterproof gloves and avoid skin contact when you do so. Immerse the ceramic in the solution inside a sealed container. For less extensive darkening, wet cloth with the solution and wrap it around the ceramic. Afterwards, place the ceramic in a large, sealable bag and let it stand for several weeks. The purpose of sealing is so that hydrogen peroxide will not lose its strength.
